When the Apple TV asks for a password, your iPhone offers to type it. This single feature removes the most common cause of failed sign-ins.

Because the device is rarely the bottleneck, any problem you do see is almost certainly your connection. That makes diagnosis quicker.

Open the App Store on the Apple TV
Search for the player named in your setup message. Install only that one.

Have your iPhone unlocked and nearby
When the sign-in field appears, a notification lets you type on the phone instead of the remote.

Let the guide finish downloading once. Every subsequent launch is much faster.
Honest limits
What Apple hardware will not do for you
- It will not rescue a weak or congested broadband connection.
- It will not improve a channel that is only provided in standard definition.
- Player choice is narrower, so if one app misbehaves the alternatives are fewer.
- App availability can change if a developer withdraws, which affects all Apple users at once.
iPhone and iPad
The same subscription works on an iPhone or iPad through a compatible player from the App Store, with the same one-stream-at-a-time rule. Handy for watching in another room, and useful for testing whether a problem is with your television or with your connection.
You can also send the picture to a television with AirPlay, although a direct connection on the Apple TV itself is always steadier than mirroring.

Why are there fewer player options on Apple TV?
Apple reviews everything on its store and applies stricter rules than Google does, so fewer media players make it through. In practice this means we point you at a specific app rather than offering a choice.
Is the picture better on Apple TV?
The hardware is strong and playback is very smooth, which shows on fast-moving content. It cannot improve a standard definition source or a weak connection, but it will not be the limiting factor either.
Can I use my iPhone to type the login?
Yes, and you should. tvOS lets you enter text from a nearby iPhone or iPad, which removes the most common source of setup errors entirely.
Does an older Apple TV still work?
Fourth-generation models and later are generally fine. Very old models predate the current app store and are not a sensible base for this, and we will tell you so rather than let you struggle.
