IPTV Ireland: frequently asked questions
Twenty-one questions our customers in Ireland actually send us, grouped by topic and answered without marketing language. If yours is not here, ask it and we will add it.
Before you buy
How is this different from a normal television subscription?
It arrives over your broadband connection instead of an aerial, a satellite dish or a cable box. That means no engineer visit and no new wiring, but it also means the quality of your internet connection matters more than it does with traditional television.
Do I need to give you my address or ID?
No. To set up a subscription we need to know what device you are using and how to send you your details. We do not ask for identity documents, and you should be wary of any service that does so without a clear reason.
Can I use it in a house share?
Yes, but a subscription covers one stream at a time. In a house where two people want different things on different screens simultaneously, you need an additional connection. Ask us for the cost first so nobody is surprised.
Do you sell to businesses, pubs or waiting rooms?
Our plans are written for households. Commercial premises have different licensing obligations for showing television publicly in Ireland, and that is a matter for the premises to resolve with the relevant rights holders. Contact us before assuming a domestic subscription is appropriate.
What if I already have another subscription?
Many customers run this alongside something else rather than instead of it. There is no requirement to cancel anything, and we would suggest keeping whatever you have until you have tested this for a month.
Devices and setup
Do I have to install anything unusual?
You install a media player application from your device's normal app store and sign in with the details we send. We tell you which player to use for your specific hardware rather than leaving you to pick from dozens.
Can I watch on more than one television in the house?
You can install it on several devices. Only one can be playing at any given moment on a single subscription. If both televisions need to work at once, that is an additional connection.
What happens when I replace my television?
Tell us what you have bought and we send instructions for the new set. There is no charge and no penalty. It is a routine request and we handle it several times a week.
Does it work over Wi-Fi or do I need a cable?
Wi-Fi is fine when the signal is strong where the television is. In older Irish houses with thick walls, a cable makes a bigger difference than any other change you can make, and it is a five euro fix rather than a new router.
Will it work if I take the device abroad?
Generally yes on a normal broadband connection, though we cannot guarantee behaviour on every network in every country. Hotel Wi-Fi is frequently the limiting factor rather than the service itself.
Watching and quality
Why is one channel sharper than another?
Because sources differ. Some channels are provided in high definition and some only in standard definition, and no amount of broadband improves a standard definition source. If a specific channel matters to you, ask about it before ordering.
Can I record programmes?
Some players offer a recording or pause function depending on the device and the channel. It is not universal, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to buy, and ask us about your particular setup if it is important.
Is there a way to stop children finding adult content?
Yes. Ask us to apply a content lock to your line and we will do it. Most players also allow a PIN on categories. If you have children in the house, mention it when you order and we will set it up from the start.
The picture froze during a big match. Why?
Major fixtures put every part of the chain under load at once, from the source through to your own street. If it happens, tell us which channel and the exact time, because that information genuinely helps us and a vague report does not.
Billing, renewals and refunds
Will I be charged automatically at the end of my term?
No. We do not store a payment method and there is no recurring billing. When the term ends, access stops unless you have chosen to renew it.
How do I renew?
Message us before your end date and tell us the term you want next. We confirm the price, take payment and extend the same line, so you do not have to set anything up again.
Can I get a refund if it does not work for me?
Our refund position is published in full on the refund policy page, alongside the statutory cancellation right that applies to consumers buying digital services at a distance in Ireland. Read it before you order rather than after.
Do you ever ask for payment details by message?
Never. We confirm an amount and send a payment request through a proper payment route. If anyone claiming to be us asks you to send card numbers or a PIN in a chat, it is not us and you should tell us about it.
Privacy, safety and rights
What personal data do you keep about me?
The minimum needed to run your subscription and answer your messages: a contact address, the device you use, and a record of your order. Our privacy policy explains what is held, why, and how long for, under the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Do you name the channels you carry?
No, and that is deliberate. We describe categories of content and do not use third-party names or logos anywhere on this website. We are not going to imply endorsement or licensing arrangements that we have not confirmed in writing.
What happens if a rights holder contacts you?
We have a published content rights policy with a route for making a complaint, and notices are acted on rather than ignored. If you hold rights and have a concern, use that page and you will get a response.
Your question is not on this page
Send it. If it turns out other people are asking the same thing, it ends up on this page with your wording rather than ours.
Happy with the answers?
Then the next step is choosing a term
Start with a month if you are still weighing it up. Go straight to a longer term if you already know your broadband and your television are up to it.
